What's Your Opinion?

I have almost finished editing the pictures from the "urban" engagement photo shoot I did a couple weeks ago.  I just need your opinion on one thing:

Which one do you like better?

The first one is color-managed with an action in Photoshop (which I usually try to stay away from.)

I often hear photographers talk about getting your own style and not swaying from it or going with any of the current trends (like this effect).  I totally agree with them , but ultimately my biggest priority is to my clients and I want them to be happy with their pictures more than anything else.

I will definitely ask Darren and Aly what they think, but I would also like to hear from you guys!  Thanks for your feedback!

  4. I like the first one better. I agree that you need your own style, but I also think photographers need to keep up with current trends. The picture looks great!

  5. Hi Jessica! It's Aly =) I like the first one more. Also, I have no problem with current trends or photoshopping images. They can be really cool sometimes! Although I don't think I'd like all or even a majority of our pics with that effect, I think having some is definitely ok. Thank you so much! Can't wait to see the rest of the pics!

  9. i am definitely going against the crowd on this, but i like the second better. i think the yellow light though warmer, looks a little too harsh and yellow is more of an angry color anyhow. the blue just looks more calm and comfortable, which is how an engaged couple should be anyhow!

  16. The 1st one is AMAZING! I love both, but the 1st one pops out more and I do love the lighting on it better. I'm a beginner when it comes to photography, so I'm not a pro, but the 1st one is my vote! It's a beautiful photo too! :)

  20. First one! A good tip is to open up actions you like and see how they are made...then tweek to create your own style by still learning from the masters! This will make your editing feel less like paint by numbers and more like creating your own master piece!

  21. I agree that staying with your style is extremely important and I think all your marketing should reflect your style - which is why all my promotional material is classic black and white.

That said - I give my customers their photos in both black and white and color - but I want them to see me as a black and white photographer. In addition, when I have a photo that seems to call for it, I do sometimes do a action that seems to fit the photo. In this case, I really like the warmth of the first photo and as long as it is specific to this shoot and you do not advertise or promote it as your style - you are doing what you should - staying true to your style as well as trying to please your clients.

    My two cents.

  22. 1st ones WARM tones
    2nd ones COOL tones

I like both, but 1st one is more modern if that's the style you are looking for. The second one is more natural.

  23. The 1st one. Definitely. I always have this problem when editing too. I can never figure out if I like the warm or the cool. It comes out of my camera a tad cool (Nikon). But, I definitely can see that I like your particular photo warmer. :)

    Blessings!

  25. I gotta say I love the warm tones of the first one and even though it's photoshopped and maybe "trendier" it still appeals more to my eye :) love this photo by the way!

  26. I like the first one a little better, but it is hard to choose!

  27. Nice Jess! I am exited to see the rest. In regards to the two images, I think it depends on what you are going for. If you are shooting for someone who wants the latest engagement trends then the first image definitely has that popular look. Personally, I would love to see something in between the two - since the first is quite warm and the second a little cold. Getting the correct skin tone is such a pain sometimes! I know I struggle with it. My professors just keep telling us that it takes practice. :)
