Fave Things Friday

I figured I haven't done a Favorite Things Friday in FOREVER and wanted to share some of my favorite new things!

1. Favorite New App:

Keepy- an excellent app for storing your kids' artwork, crafts, milestones, cute things they say (recorded) etc.  I LOVE this because Allie makes new crafts and artwork everyday and I don't have the room for it, Macsen is always saying such cute and funny things and now I can record it, and Jensen's milestones are SO hard for me to keep track of!  All 3 problems solved!  Plus, it has a super great layout and I can easily share all of these things with their grandparents and aunts and uncles.

2. Favorite New Hobby:

Fish!  My husband's dad gave him his SUPER awesome and nice fish tank setup and it has kept us entertained for weeks now...every weekend is a new thing and this weekend we are getting some fish.  The kids LOVE it so much and it is a much less messy pet than a dog or cat :)

3. Favorite New Buddy:

Speaking of pets, this little guy is my sister's new "baby" and he is the cutest!  They call him "Barry!"

 4. Favorite New Product:

I was looking for some new bras that work well with nursing and weren't ugly and I am so glad I found these ones from Target!  I got 3 of them and they are so cute and comfy!

5. Favorite New Quote:

General Conference was a couple weekends ago and I loved this quote from it:

Life is Goooood

Well, thanks for being patient with my scheduled posts the last couple weeks.  I had a lot of fun with my family while they were here and was sad to see them go, but I will see them again soon.  Plus, now I have my little bro and sis just an hour away so I can see them more.

I have been feeling so grateful lately...for a lot of things, but mostly for my family.  This pregnancy has been SO much different than with Allie, and not just the physical aspect but also the emotional side of things.  I have been nothing but excited for this little baby and SO much more relaxed about the whole experience now that I know what to expect.  I feel nothing but gratitude, even when I am feeling a little sick or tired.  Although, the whole weight gain thing is still probably the hardest part of it for me...how vain...

Anyways, I am planning on doing just a few posts here and there about baby and maternity stuff, but I won't bore you with it too much.  For now I just have to share some of the things I have been feeling grateful for because I just can't help myself:

A late Spring in Utah
Normally I would not be grateful for this, except when I am pregnant I am significantly hotter all the time.  Luckily we didn't go from 40 degree weather to the 90's like we sometimes get.  We had a few weeks of nice 70 degree temperatures :)

I have been so addicted to Pinterest lately...but there are so many inspiring photos!  Just try it out for yourself if you haven't already...you'll see what I mean.

Relaxing Sundays & Naps
Do I really have to expound on this?  This is definitely more appreciated by pregnant women :)

Walks to see the horses
Allie lives for this, so it is fun to see her get so excited to do something so simple.  This is one of my favorite things about having kids - they make you remember how amazing and exciting the world is.

Most of all: My family.
I don't know what I would do or who I would be without them.  I am also so grateful for such an amazing husband, sweet little girl, and this baby on the way.  Pretty sure I hit the jackpot.

What are you grateful for right now?

How to Take Better Pictures: Guest Post

I wanted to share a guest post I did a while ago on my friend's blog...

Why and how did you get started in photography?

I got started with photography about 7 years ago.  My first digital camera was a Canon Powershot and I have always loved those for point and shoot cameras.  I still use a Canon Powershot when I don't want to lug around a big DSLR in my purse.

After owning my first digital camera I realized how much fun photography was and decided to slowly get into it.  I bought a $200 camera (Kodak) that looked a little more professional and started doing free photo sessions that I would advertise on Craigslist.  After getting more practice I started charging a very minimal amount to save up for a DSLR.  Then I bought my Nikon D100 for $500, Nikor 50mm lens, then eventually my Nikon D90 that I am currently using.

For someone just starting out (whether for a professional reason or just for family pictures) I would definitely suggest saving up for a D90.  It is definitely worth it.  or, buy a used D100, D70, D80, D90 etc. on craigslist or KSL.com.  For a starter lens, I would definitely go with a 50mm 1.8f.  And never buy the cheaper lenses.  They aren't worth it.

Are there classes you would recommend for beginners, or did you learn more from other means?

The first class I took was a beginner's course at Utah Valley University (after hours and not just for UVU students)  It was taught by Rex Allen (owner of Allen's Camera) and it was on $35 for a 6 week course.  It was definitely a good starting class for me.  However, the classes that I would recommend for all starting and intermediate photographers is Nicole Hill's classes.  She has a few different ones and they are all AMAZING.  You will learn SO much and it is worth EVERY SINGLE penny.  Here is the website with more info about those.

Do you have a favorite photo shoot?
My favorite shoots are always the ones that I have fun with, can relax while I'm there, have good lighting, and the pictures turn out really good.  I have had a lot of favorite shoots, but the one that I can think of last is this one I did last November.  The weather was a perfect 72 degrees, I had a gorgeous couple to work with, who I knew and could relax with, and the pictures turned out great. The second part of the shoot here.

My second favorite shoot recently was this one I did.  I just love photographing couples and bridal/groom sessions are really fun.  It was another gorgeous day and a gorgeous location in the foothills of the mountains.  Plus, I had my MIL there helping out, which is always a lot less stressful and makes the shoot MUCH easier.

What's your favorite thing about doing photography?

My favorite thing ever is when I can show someone how beautiful they really are.  When I see them look at their pictures and they are surprised at how good they look.  I love to see the confidence that a good picture can give someone.  My favorite part of a shoot is when I come home and put all the pictures on the computer.  It's like opening a present to see all the pictures on the big screen and adjust them just how I want them; especially when they turn out even better than I thought they would, and when I captured it just how I wanted to.

What's your least favorite thing about doing photography?

Bad weather, difficult children, and stressful shoots that don't go as well as I was hoping.

What are some tips you'd give us amateurs who'd just like to know how to take better pictures?

Hmmm. There are so many tips I don't know where to start.  First of all, try to keep your backgrounds as simple as possible.  Try to shoot in the best lighting available (no direct sunlight, 1 hour around sunrise or before sunset, and in shade)  Make sure the eyes of your subject are in focus.  Use the white balance settings on your camera so the coloring looks good.  You can read more about some of these tips here.

I hope that this helps and please feel free to email me any specific questions about photography!  You can see more of my work on my photoblog.

What I'm Loving This New Year

White and black.

Exposed beams on white ceilings and walls

These mother and baby photos - anyone in the Salt Lake City area want to be my models for a Mother's Day shoot?

Pretty silk blouses

Again, the wicker furniture and everything turquoise

Simple and organized desk areas...which reminds me I need to makeover my husband's desk.  Badly.

Some of these have inspired some new projects to work on to consume me in these long winter months...I will post if I ever get to them :)

4 Years!

Today is me and my husband's 4th anniversary!  Yay for us! :)

Just a few of my favorite pics of us:

This is so funny, because Anna from Lona de Anna has tagged me in a blogging game...This game is called Photo #6. I am required to go back to the 6th photo I ever uploaded to my blog, re-post it to show you all, and remember the moment. What's funny is that I posted this before I read her post, and picture #6 just so happens to be this first picture!

(Ice Skating with my sister on her birthday)

(We got married on a gorgeous day and the blossoms and tulips were out)

Pregnant with Allie:

(This is when I was morning sick.  We went up the AF canyon to get some fresh air and to do some fishing.)

Best Day Ever:

(Allie's birth was so amazing...and probably the easiest birth ever. I loved being at the hospital.)

We're a little family!

Now, for the Picture #6 game...I would like to tag:

Allie's Easter

(Posted Here)

I know this post is pretty late, but I thought my family would like to see Allie's first Easter basket.  I really didn't want to spend a lot of money on a basket and everything to fill it with.  So, I used what I had and added a little bit of candy (like 3 pieces total.)

I painted the tin with white primer.  It took a few coats.

I bought the bouncy balls because I knew she would have fun with them, and because they had dinosaurs inside (Land Before Time Series are Allie's favorite movies)

She was really excited to see that the Easter bunny had come.

"Our Typical Morning" Photo Shoot

Every morning I wake up with a fresh, natural-looking face wearing cute pajamas matching Allie's.  My hair is still perfectly french braided to the side after sleeping on it.  Allie and I head the the kitchen and make a batch of pancakes or some other extravagant breakfast meal together, without making the kitchen a mess at all of course.  Allie is the perfect assistant cook and we never spill or break anything.  We sit down at our perfectly cleared and cleaned table in our clean and freshly vacuumed dining area and eat breakfast, Allie eats anything and everything I put on her plate...okay I'll stop...its just getting annoying now.
Didn't Adrian do such an awesome job on this shoot?  I just thought it was such a cute idea...and now I have proof that I was a good mom :)  This was a really fun shoot, especially the eating pancakes part.  Thanks for the photos Adrian, I just love them!
...Maybe sometime I'll write about what our mornings (or our days) are really typically like...

Sewing Project #1 - Accent Pillows

The first project I decided to do was accent pillows for Allie's bed.  Her room is becoming mostly white, tans, and some accent pinks and turquoise.

I made these pillows out of my bridesmaid linen skirt from my sister's wedding.  I had only worn it once since July 2008, so I decided I should probably get rid of it or use it for something else.

Here is a pic of the skirt: (I'm the one holding the baby)

And here is the pic of the skirt, revisited:

I used some pom pom fringe I had picked up at my local thrift store, which came in this ginormous bag of lace for $2 :)

Doesn't it make you want one of these?

Or to do this to one of your chairs?

Too bad I don't have more of it...

Remember, I still have 2 more projects to finish...so stay tuned :)
